These lessons are challenging to Christians. They are not a call to "compromise" or "conformity to the world." They are, instead, a reminder of how many in the world view Christians and the ways Christians (even "us") contribute to those negative views through unchristian actions and words. It should be noted, though many have trouble with this concept, we are discussing "perceptions" which have been formed by many factors beyond the individual's control.
If Jesus could be a friend to "sinners" (Luke 15:1-2) then those who are his disciples, who have been called to "help people find Jesus" have a responsibility to examine their lives and how they can move from being "believers" to becoming "disciples" of Jesus Christ.
