Course Description
The Life of Christ module focuses upon the biblical record of the life of the individual known as Jesus of Nazareth. The first four books of the New Testament, collectively known as the gospels since the story of Jesus is said to be ‘good news’ (gospel), focus on specific teachings and events in the life of Jesus who is presented as the Christ (Messiah).
The books, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, are not exhaustive biographies. The events are not so much presented in chronological fashion as they are shaped for the purpose of providing convincing arguments for Jesus as Messiah. They are meant for believers and those who are exploring faith. The books seek to explain the unique claims of Christianity: …it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught (Luke 1:3-4).
The books are not meant simply as a record of events. The authors’ purposes include a desire to give birth to, or renew, the faith of the readers.
Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name (John 20:30-31).
